Basketball Defensive Zigzag Slides
A basketball-specific warm-up in pairs where students zigzag down the court with defensive slides, first without a ball and then guarding a dribbler. It warms up hips, ankles, and leg muscles and builds a solid defensive stance.
How to play
- Set 4 zigzag lines of cones along the court, about 13 feet apart on the diagonal, with pairs at each line. Minutes 0-2: jog down and back with hip mobility.
- Minutes 2-4: each student slides the zigzag in a defensive stance: feet shoulder-width, hips low, sliding without crossing the feet; at each cone, drop step and change direction.
- Minutes 4-7: an offensive player dribbles the zigzag at a jog and the defender stays in front, arm's length away, without reaching. Attack going down, defend coming back.
- Minutes 7-9: the dribbler changes direction whenever they want and the defender must react; the defender scores a point for keeping position.
- Minute 9-10: two baseline-to-baseline sprints at fast-break pace.
Rules
- Do not cross your feet when sliding.
- The defender never reaches for the ball: just stay in front and keep the gap.
- Each pair waits until the pair ahead passes the third cone before starting.
Variations
Easier
Move the cones closer, about 10 feet, and have the dribbler walk.
Standard
Zigzag with a dribbler at a jogging pace.
Harder
The dribbler can speed up at any time, and the defender keeps hands behind the back to force footwork.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: in a wheelchair, the student follows the zigzag with turns, shadowing the dribbler.
- Visual impairment: use larger, bright cones; the dribbler uses a ball with a bell or calls out.
- Low fitness: cover only half the court and recover on the way back.
Learning goals
- Warm up the legs with basketball-specific defensive footwork.
- Hold a basic defensive stance through changes of direction.
- React to a dribbler's moves without fouling.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 24
- basketballs: 13
Teacher tip
The hardest part is staying low the whole way; cue students to sit in an invisible chair. Stagger the starts to avoid collisions at the turns.
