Ball Kisses
Each child pushes a beach ball along the ground with their hands, and when the drum stops, they find a friend so their balls can give each other a gentle kiss. It builds controlled pushing and connecting with classmates.
How to play
- Everyone gets a beach ball and holds it with both hands: lift it up, bring it down, give it a hug (1 min).
- When the drum plays, push the ball along the floor with your hands, walking bent over (1 min).
- When the drum stops, find a friend and let your balls kiss: a very gentle bump (1 min).
- Keep walking, now pushing the ball with just one hand, and switch friends at every kiss (2 min).
- Last kiss: all the balls meet in the middle of the circle and we give them a big hug (1 min).
Rules
- The ball stays on the ground, not in the air.
- Ball kisses are gentle.
- Find a different friend each time.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, children may carry the ball in their arms, and the teacher helps them find a partner.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, push the ball along the ground and switch friends at each kiss.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, push only with the hand the teacher names, and balls kiss while resting on the ground, without picking them up.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the ball rests on the child's lap and a classmate comes over for the kiss.
- Autism: allow the child to kiss balls with the same classmate or with the teacher every time if needed.
- Visual impairment: use a brightly colored ball or one with a bell inside, in a smaller, clear area.
Learning goals
- Push a large ball while controlling its path.
- Move while crouching without bumping into others.
- Find and greet different classmates.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Beach balls: 25
- Hand drum: 1
Teacher tip
Don't fully inflate the beach balls so they don't roll away as easily. On a windy day, play in a sheltered corner or use large rubber balls.
