Badminton: Six-Corner Shadow to a Called Number
A badminton footwork warm-up with no shuttle: students move from the base to six numbered spots on the court, following the number their partner calls. It activates the legs and ankles with real badminton footwork and trains reaction to an unpredictable cue.
How to play
- Ankle, hip and shoulder mobility with the racket and light skipping in place (2 min).
- In pairs, on half a court: mark six numbered spots with cones (two front, two sides, two back) and a central base (1 min).
- The mover, holding a racket, split-steps at the base; the partner calls a number and the mover goes there, shadows the stroke and returns to base. 30-second sets (2 min).
- Switch roles and call two numbers in a row, done in order without going back to base in between (2 min).
- Final 20-second set at full speed with the partner counting complete movements (1 min).
Rules
- Returning to base after every shadow stroke is required, except in the two-number set.
- The final lunge to the net is made with the racket leg, knee lined up over the foot.
- Pairs on neighboring courts work on opposite halves so rackets don't clash.
- The partner calls the next number only once the mover has stepped on the base.
Variations
Easier
Use only four corners and call the number with more time.
Standard
Six spots with a called number and return to base.
Harder
The partner points instead of calling, so the mover has to watch.
Adaptations
- Hearing impairment: the partner shows the number with fingers.
- Ankle injury: walks the movements and works only on reaction and the stroke motion.
- Overweight: 20-second sets with 40 seconds of rest and spots closer to the base.
Learning goals
- Activate the lower body with badminton-specific footwork.
- Improve reaction and recovery to the base position.
- Perform the net lunge with safe knee alignment.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 28
- badminton rackets: 14
Teacher tip
Ask partners to call numbers at an irregular rhythm: unpredictability is what makes the split-step useful.
