Back-to-Back Ball Pass Stretch
Sitting back to back in pairs, students pass a foam ball with trunk twists, overhead and between the legs, always slowly and with steady breathing. It stretches the back, shoulders and hips, and requires coordinating with a partner they can't see.
How to play
- Make pairs of similar height sitting on the floor back to back, legs crossed, with one foam ball per pair (1 min).
- Twists: one partner turns to the right and hands off the ball; the other receives it turning to the left. Do 6 slow passes one way and 6 the other (2 min).
- Overhead: the partner with the ball lifts it overhead with straight arms and the other reaches up to take it; 6 passes (1 min).
- Down low: with legs straight and slightly apart, pass the ball under the arms by gently leaning forward and back; 6 passes (1 min).
- Final challenge: combine all three passes in a row without dropping the ball, breathing slowly through each one (1 min).
- To finish, partners lean back to back and breathe together, feeling each other's breathing for 30 seconds (1 min).
Rules
- Pass slowly, without yanking or sharp twists.
- Keep your back touching your partner's whenever possible.
- If the ball drops, pick it up without standing and keep going.
- Stretch only to a gentle pull, never to pain.
Variations
Easier
Do only the twist passes, with no overhead or low passes.
Standard
Do all three pass types in sets of 6, then combine them.
Harder
Pass with eyes closed, saying a cue word before handing off the ball.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the pair uses two chairs placed back to back and does twist and overhead passes.
- Visual impairment: the partner says "here it comes" and lightly touches the student's arm before each pass.
- Low flexibility: allow bent knees on low passes and a little space between partners.
Learning goals
- Stretch the back, shoulder and hip muscles.
- Coordinate movements with a partner without eye contact.
- Lower the heart rate with slow movements and breathing.

Teacher tip
Pair students by height so the twists feel comfortable. Remind them it's a stretch, not a race: praise the slowest, most precise pairs.
