Back-of-Hand Beanbag Balance Walk
Students move around the space carrying a beanbag on the back of one hand, switch hands on a signal, and pass it to classmates without grabbing it. Students work on object control, attention, and adjusting speed and body level.
How to play
- Each student places a beanbag on the back of one hand, arm stretched out in front, and spreads out in general space (30 sec).
- Walk: move anywhere; on each whistle, slide the beanbag from the back of one hand to the back of the other without grabbing it (90 sec).
- Levels: walk on tiptoes, low with bent knees, or at a light jog, depending on whether the teacher's hand is up, down, or level (90 sec).
- Beanbag mail: when you meet a classmate, touch the backs of your hands together and slide the beanbag across; each student counts their trades (2 min).
- Final challenge: each student carries two beanbags, one on each hand, along a line on the floor to the end and back (90 sec).
Rules
- Only use your palm or fingers to pick up the beanbag if it falls.
- If it falls, pick it up and keep going; the game does not stop.
- When jogging, keep your eyes forward and give others space.
- Trades happen at a walk, never while running.
Variations
Easier
Carry the beanbag on an open palm instead of the back of the hand.
Standard
Travel with the beanbag on the back of the hand, changing hands and levels.
Harder
Pop it a few inches up from the back of the hand and catch it on the back of the hand again.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: carry the beanbag on the back of the hand or on a resting forearm, moving in a wide-open area.
- Visual impairment: move with a partner guide and use brightly colored beanbags.
- Skill level: students who have it down jog and weave between classmates; students who struggle use the palm.
Learning goals
- Control an object on a body part while moving.
- Change level and speed in response to a visual cue.
- Interact with classmates carefully and precisely.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Beanbags: 50
Teacher tip
With 6-year-olds, start on the palm and move to the back of the hand once they have control. Praise students who pick up a dropped beanbag and keep going calmly: drops are part of the game.
