Agility Ladder: Lettered Pattern Codes
Each footwork pattern on the ladder has a letter (A, B, C, D, E). The teacher shows a card with a short word and the group must chain the patterns in that order, one per section of the ladder, memorizing the sequence before starting.
How to play
- Joint mobility for ankles and hips plus easy jogging (2 min).
- Introduce the five patterns and their letters: A two feet in, B lateral in-in-out, C Ickey shuffle, D two-foot hops, E in-out zigzag (2 min).
- Groups of five per ladder: show a two-letter card (for example, AC) and run the first half of the ladder with A and the second half with C (2 min).
- Three-letter cards: split the ladder into three sections with cones, each with its own pattern (2 min).
- Final challenge: each group makes up a four-letter word from the available letters and hands it to the next group (2 min).
Rules
- If you step on a rung or get the pattern wrong, finish the run without repeating and talk about it on the way back.
- Start when the previous student has finished half the ladder.
- Check the ladder before starting so it is pulled tight and does not slide.
- Jog back outside the ladder, never over it.
Variations
Easier
One-letter cards with a demo first.
Standard
Two- and three-letter sequences memorized before starting.
Harder
Show the card once the student is already in the ladder, forcing a pattern change on the fly.
Adaptations
- Visual impairment: high-contrast tape ladder and a hands-on explanation of each pattern through a partner's hands.
- Autism: keeps a fixed card at hand with the five letters and their drawings.
- Ankle injury: walks the non-jumping patterns (A, B and E).
Learning goals
- Improve foot coordination at different speeds.
- Memorize and perform chained motor sequences.
- Activate ankles and calves before more intense efforts.
Equipment for a class of 25
- agility ladders: 6
- cards: 20
Teacher tip
Keep the sheet with the five letters visible beside each ladder for the first few minutes, then remove it to work on memory.
