Aerobics Dice: The Roll Picks the Step
An aerobics warm-up in which a giant die picks the basic step (march, step touch, V-step, mambo, knee lift, kick) and a second die picks the number of eight-count blocks. Taking turns, a student rolls the dice and leads that block for the class, so the session is built on the fly.
How to play
- Quick review of the six basic aerobics steps with their numbers on a large card on the wall (2 min).
- Music at about 130 bpm; the teacher makes the first roll and leads the block to model counting and changing steps (1 min).
- Taking turns, a student rolls both dice, announces the step and blocks (“V-step, four eights”) and leads it facing the group, counting aloud (5 min).
- Final chained rolls: the new step joins the previous one to form a mini routine of two or three steps (2 min).
Rules
- The leader announces the step change over the last four counts (“four, three, two, change”).
- Work in staggered rows so everyone can see the leader.
- If the blocks die shows a 1, roll again so each step lasts at least two eights.
- The low-impact version of each step is always allowed.
Variations
Easier
One step die only and fixed blocks of four eights.
Standard
Two dice and a different leader for each roll.
Harder
Add a third die for direction of travel (forward, backward, 90-degree turn).
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: seated version of each step with arms and legs from the chair, and can be the one who rolls and announces.
- Hearing impairment: the leader shows the remaining counts before the change with their fingers.
- Autism: may lead holding the step card or just roll the die without leading.
Learning goals
- Activate the cardiovascular system with aerobics steps.
- Count music in eights and anticipate changes.
- Take on the leader role in front of the group with confidence.
Equipment for a class of 25
- giant dice: 2
- speaker: 1
- cards: 1
Teacher tip
If you don't have giant dice, an on-screen spinner or cards in a bag work too; what matters is that the leader role rotates quickly.
