A Feather on My Palm Along the Path
Each child carries a large feather on an open palm and walks a tape trail on the floor very slowly to place it in the nest. Carrying something so light makes them move gently and calmly while keeping an eye on the path.
How to play
- Tape a gently curving trail that ends at a nest (a box or basket) (1 min).
- Sitting down, each child sets the feather on their palm and moves it slowly without letting it fall (1 min).
- Stand up and walk the trail very slowly with the feather on your palm, as if carrying a sleeping baby bird (2 min).
- Lay the feather gently in the nest and walk back along the trail backward, slowly (1 min).
- Sit around the nest and blow very softly so the feathers move without flying away (1 min).
Rules
- I walk slowly so the feather doesn't fly away.
- If it falls, I pick it up and keep going, no rush.
- I talk quietly; the baby bird is sleeping.
- I follow the trail.
Variations
Easier
Age 3: they may hold the feather between two fingers, on a straight trail.
Standard
Age 4: feather on an open palm along a gently curving trail.
Harder
Age 5: feather on the back of the hand or on the forearm.
Adaptations
- Students who use a wheelchair carry the feather on their palm while a classmate slowly pushes the chair along the trail.
- Blind or low-vision students: use a silk scarf instead of a feather, which is easier to feel, and a thick rope trail.
- Allergies: swap the feathers for large dry leaves or pieces of tissue paper.
Learning goals
- Calm down by moving slowly and gently.
- Balance both their body and a light object while walking.
- Control the strength of their breath and movement.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Large feathers: 25
- Colored masking tape: 1
Teacher tip
Close the windows and turn off any fan before you start. Ask about feather allergies; synthetic craft feathers usually work fine.
