Yoga Traffic Light: Walk, Pose, Freeze
Students walk slowly around the space and respond to three colored cards: green to walk while breathing, yellow to do a yoga pose, and red to freeze balancing. It works on self-control and a gradual drop in heart rate.
How to play
- The whole group spreads out over half the blacktop; the teacher shows the three cards and one pose for each (1 min).
- Green: walk very slowly, breathing in for two steps and out for two steps (1 min).
- Yellow: stop and do the pose the teacher names (tree, mountain, warrior, or star) for three breaths (1.5 min).
- Red: freeze balancing on one foot like a statue until green comes back; if you put your foot down, just lift it again (1.5 min).
- The changes get slower and slower; the last color is red on both feet with eyes closed and three deep breaths (1 min).
Rules
- Nobody is out: if you move on red, simply return to the pose.
- Walk without touching anyone and look ahead.
- Cards are held high and shown silently.
- Arms may open wide to help balance.
Variations
Easier
Do red on both feet without closing the eyes.
Standard
Use all three signals with a different pose on each yellow.
Harder
A student becomes the traffic light and chooses the yellow pose.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: on green the student moves slowly in a wheelchair or walker, and on red balances using the arms.
- Hearing impairment: the signals are visual, so just make sure the student can see the cards.
- Students who struggle with self-control: start next to the teacher with the job of helping hold the cards.
Learning goals
- Respond calmly to changing visual signals.
- Hold simple balance poses.
- Match breathing to a slow walk.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cardstock: 3
Teacher tip
Show the cards without talking; a quiet teacher spreads calm. Gradually slow down the color changes so heart rates come down.
