Word and Gesture Echo Circle
Standing in a circle, each student says one word about how they feel at the end of class with a slow gesture, and the whole class repeats both like an echo. It builds expressing feelings through movement, listening and calm.
How to play
- Everyone stands in a circle, an arm's length apart. Take two slow breaths together (30 sec).
- Model it first: say a word ("calm") and make a slow gesture, such as lowering open hands from your head down to your waist.
- The class repeats the word softly and copies the gesture in slow motion, like an echo.
- Go around the circle to the right. Each student says their word and does their gesture, and the class echoes it. Each turn takes about 10 seconds, so a full lap takes about 4 minutes.
- If someone can't think of a word, they may repeat a classmate's word but must use their own gesture.
- To finish, the class makes up one shared goodbye gesture that everyone does together in silence (1 min).
Rules
- One word per person, not a sentence.
- Gestures are slow and don't touch anyone.
- Echo softly; never shout.
- Every word is OK, including "tired" or "mad."
Variations
Easier
Offer three words with gestures and each student picks one.
Standard
Any word with the student's own gesture, echoed by the class.
Harder
The word must describe a specific moment from class and the gesture must act it out.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the gesture can use only arms, hands or facial expression.
- Hearing impairment: the gesture leads, and the word is said clearly for lip reading or signed.
- Shyness: the student can do only the gesture without a word, and the class still echoes it.
Learning goals
- Express their mood after class with one word and one gesture.
- Copy classmates' slow movements with attention and control.
- Accept and respect other people's feelings.
Teacher tip
If gestures get silly or over the top, remind students the echo is in slow motion. With more than 20 students, run two circles so it doesn't drag.
