Twin Tree Partner Pose
In pairs, standing shoulder to shoulder, students hold each other at the waist and do tree pose together, joining their free hands overhead like a shared treetop. It builds supported balance and calm through breathing.
How to play
- Partners stand side by side, shoulder to shoulder, with the inside arm around the partner's waist or shoulder (0.5 min).
- Each student places the outside foot on the ankle or calf of the inside leg, never on the knee (1 min).
- They join their outside hands in front of the chest and breathe together three times, finding stillness (1 min).
- They raise their joined hands overhead to make the treetop and hold for five breaths (1.5 min).
- They switch sides and repeat; to finish, they sit back to back and breathe without talking (2 min).
Rules
- The foot goes on the ankle or calf, never the knee.
- If one partner loses balance, both lower the foot and start again, with no laughing at each other.
- Look at one spot in front of you.
- Let go of your partner gently.
Variations
Easier
Keep the outside toes touching the floor, like a kickstand.
Standard
Do the tree with the foot on the calf and joined hands overhead for five breaths.
Harder
Make trees in trios, with the middle student supporting both sides.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student makes the tree from a chair, joining a free hand with a standing partner.
- Visual impairment: contact with the partner gives a balance reference; warn the student before each change.
- Weaker balance: the student stands next to a wall on the free side.
Learning goals
- Balance on one foot with a partner's help.
- Sync breathing with a partner.
- Help a partner feel safe in the pose.
Teacher tip
Younger students tend to put the foot on the knee, so check pair by pair. Start with the easier side so they find success early.
