Tchoukball Rule of Three Game
An adapted two-rebounder tchoukball game that introduces the rule of three step by step: no more than three passes, three steps, and three seconds with the ball. Students practice a no-contact, no-interception game, quick decisions, and catching rebounds.
How to play
- Use an area about 80 by 50 feet with a rebounder at each end and a 10-foot semicircular no-go zone. 4 teams of 6: 2 play while 2 keep score and fetch balls, switching every 5 minutes.
- Explain the game (2 min): either team may shoot at either rebounder. A point is scored when the rebound lands in the court without being caught.
- Block 1 (5 min): three-steps and three-seconds rules only. Defenders don't intercept or touch; they position themselves to catch the rebound.
- Block 2 (5 min): add the three-pass rule before shooting.
- Block 3 (5 min): every player must shoot once before anyone shoots again.
- The other two teams play block 3 (5 min). At the end, take 2 minutes to discuss which rule changed the game most.
Rules
- No intercepting passes and no touching opponents; contact gives a point to the other team.
- If the ball hits the floor during passing, possession goes to the other team.
- Nobody steps in the no-go zone; stepping in while shooting gives a point to the opponents.
- Shoot at the net, never at the defenders.
Variations
Easier
Allow five passes and let the rebound bounce once before it's caught.
Standard
Full rule of three with shots at both rebounders.
Harder
Limit teams to two shots in a row at the same rebounder to force switching ends.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a protected receiving spot where teammates can pass without pressure, and the student may shoot from closer.
- Autism: introduce each new rule with a picture card before the block and keep the same team.
- Lower fitness: allow free substitutions with the scoring team.
Learning goals
- Apply the rule of three in tchoukball play.
- Make quick passing and shooting decisions.
- Play without contact while respecting opponents.
Equipment for a class of 25
- tchoukball rebounder: 2
- soft ball: 2
- cones: 16
- pinnies: 12
Teacher tip
Adding rules in blocks keeps things manageable; early on, stop play at each violation and explain it. Scorekeepers can also count passes to help teams follow the rule.
