Snail Trail Back Rub
In pairs, one child lies face down while the other slowly rolls a soft ball over their back like a snail making slow trails. It builds relaxation, body awareness and gentle care for a partner.
How to play
- Make pairs and give each pair a mat and a soft ball. One child lies face down with their head resting on their hands (30 sec).
- Say: "The ball is a very slow snail going for a walk." Show with one child how to roll it slowly with light pressure.
- Give a short cue every 20 seconds: "The snail climbs up your back," "makes circles on your shoulders," "walks down one arm" (1.5 min).
- Say: "Uh-oh, it's raining and the snail hides": the ball rests still on the back for a few seconds.
- On a tambourine tap, partners switch: the one lying down now gives the back rub (2.5 min).
- At the end, each pair whispers "thank you" and puts the ball back in the bin.
Rules
- Roll the ball slowly and don't press hard.
- Never roll on the head or neck.
- If your partner doesn't like it, stop and go softer.
- Use whisper voices only.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, guide each move and roll only on the back, not arms or legs.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, follow trail cues: up, down, circles and freeze.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, the giver draws a simple shape with the ball and the partner tries to guess it.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the child gets the rub seated in their chair on shoulders and arms, and gives it from the chair on a partner's arm or lap.
- Autism or touch sensitivity: the child can give the rub without receiving it, or roll the ball on their own arms and legs.
- Skill level: kids who struggle to control pressure use a bigger, softer ball; confident kids can use two balls at once.
Learning goals
- Relax the body after activity.
- Notice different parts of the back and arms.
- Treat a partner gently and respectfully.
Equipment for a class of 25
- soft balls: 10
- mats: 10
Teacher tip
Set out the mats before class so you don't lose time. Walk between pairs and adjust the pressure by placing your hand over theirs.
