Slow Train Into the Station
In trains of four or five cars, kids move around the space following the tambourine as it gets slower and slower, until they pull into the station and sit inside the hoops. It builds pacing, self-control and teamwork.
How to play
- Before you start, put several hoops on the ground in one corner: that's the station. Make trains of four or five; each car puts hands on the shoulders of the child in front (30 sec).
- Tap the tambourine at a walking pace and say: "The train is leaving the station." Trains walk around the playground without bumping others (1 min).
- Say: "Night is coming and the train is getting tired." Tap more and more slowly, and the trains walk at the same pace (1 min).
- Every 30 seconds, the front car moves to the back so everyone gets a turn as the engine.
- With a very soft tap, say: "We're at the station!" Each train pulls in slowly and each car sits down inside a hoop (1 min).
- Sitting in their hoops, they make the sound of a train powering down, "choo..." softer and softer until it's silent (1 min).
Rules
- Walk to the tambourine's beat; never run.
- Rest your hands on shoulders; no pushing.
- If the train stops, the car behind stops too.
- At the station, everyone sits quietly in their own hoop.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, make trains of two or three, and you be the engine of one of them.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, use trains of four or five that switch engines.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, everyone but the engine closes their eyes, and the engine leads very slowly.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the child is the engine or the station master who taps the tambourine with you.
- Visual impairment: the child rides in the middle of the train, never in front, and you call out each change.
- Skill level: kids who keep the beat well stay the engine longer; kids who speed up ride right behind you.
Learning goals
- Match walking speed to a beat that slows down.
- Move as a group carefully without pushing.
- Shift gradually from walking to stillness.
Equipment for a class of 25
- hand drum: 1
- hoops: 20
Teacher tip
Small trains mean less waiting and less pushing. Tap loudly at first, then more softly; lower volume calms kids too.
