Slow-Motion Balloon Landing
Each child gently tosses a balloon up and follows it down with their body, so they reach the floor at the same time as the balloon and stay lying there. It builds slow, controlled movement and visual tracking.
How to play
- Give each child a balloon and spread them out with room around them. Say: "The balloon is tired and wants to sleep" (30 sec).
- Model it: toss the balloon a little with both hands, watch it and lower your body slowly at the same speed it falls.
- Say: "Up!" They toss, watch the balloon and sink little by little, first to their knees, then sitting, reaching the floor when the balloon lands (1 min).
- Repeat four or five times. After each landing, they stay still for a few seconds before getting up slowly (2 min).
- On the last one, say: "Now the balloon stays to sleep with us." They lie on their backs with the balloon on their tummy and watch it rise and fall as they breathe (1 min).
- To finish, they sit up slowly and hug the balloon before handing it back.
Rules
- Toss the balloon softly, just a little way up.
- Sink to the floor slowly; no flopping.
- Take care of your own balloon; don't grab someone else's.
- If the balloon drifts away, walk to get it; no running.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, they sink only to sitting, and you toss the balloon along with them.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, they sink all the way to lying down as the balloon lands.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, in pairs, one tosses the balloon and the other sinks to its rhythm; then they switch.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: from a chair, the child follows the balloon down with arms and head until hands rest on the lap.
- Autism or fear of balloons: use a juggling scarf, which falls just as slowly and won't pop.
- Skill level: kids with good control toss higher to sink more slowly; others toss lower to keep it easy.
Learning goals
- Control the body during a slow, steady descent.
- Track a falling object with the eyes.
- Relax lying down while noticing the breath.

Teacher tip
Blow up the balloons before class and not all the way, so they're softer and quieter. Pick up any broken pieces right away.
