Sleepy Sloths in Slow Motion
Kids pretend to be a sloth that wakes up, looks for a branch, eats a leaf and falls asleep again, all in super slow motion. It builds slow, controlled movement, imitation and calming down.
How to play
- Spread kids out curled up on the floor. Say: "We're sloths, the slowest animal in the jungle. Right now we're asleep" (20 sec).
- Say: "The sloth opens one eye... then the other." They stretch one arm, then the other, so slowly you can barely tell (1 min).
- Say: "It gets up to find a branch." They stand up little by little and walk very slowly, moving arms and legs like they're hanging (1 min).
- Say: "It finds a yummy leaf." They reach out slowly, grab it and chew calmly with a very slow mouth (40 sec).
- Say: "It's getting so sleepy." They yawn slowly and sink to the floor bit by bit until they're curled up again (1 min).
- Finish asleep, breathing slowly while you count to ten in a very soft voice.
Rules
- Sloths are never in a hurry.
- Move without touching anyone.
- Lower yourself to the floor carefully, using your hands.
- Whisper voices only.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, do everything sitting or kneeling without standing up.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, do the whole story from sleeping to sleeping.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, in pairs, one is the sloth and the other copies like a slow-motion shadow.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the child plays the sloth from a chair using arms, head and face.
- Autism: preview the sequence with pictures or gestures before starting.
- Skill level: kids who move well add slow one-foot balances; kids who rush copy you up close.
Learning goals
- Move slowly and with control.
- Imitate an animal's movements.
- Shift gradually from activity to rest.
Teacher tip
Move along with them and exaggerate the slowness, even in how you talk. Showing a picture of a sloth at the start really hooks little ones.
