Sleeping Statues and the Fairy Wand
Kids move slowly to soft music and, when it stops, fall asleep like statues on the floor. The fairy brushes a scarf over the stillest child, who becomes a fairy helper. It builds self-control and stillness.
How to play
- Spread kids out around the gym and play slow music. Say: "Move slowly, like you're walking underwater" (1 min).
- Stop the music and say: "Sleeping statues!" Everyone sinks slowly to the floor and lies very still with eyes closed.
- You're the fairy: walk among them with a scarf and gently brush it over the stillest child, touching their hand.
- Whoever feels the scarf gets up quietly and becomes a fairy helper, walking with you to find other still statues (2 min).
- Fairy helpers touch only the hand with one finger, no tickling. When there are five or six fairies, start the music and play another round (2 min).
- To finish, everyone, fairies and statues, lies down together and takes three slow breaths before sitting up.
Rules
- Statues don't move or talk.
- Fairies touch only the hand, gently, with no tickling.
- Sink to the floor slowly, no flopping.
- No one is left out: at the end, everyone is a fairy or a statue.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, only you play the fairy and wake everyone up little by little.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, each child who wakes up becomes a fairy helper.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, fairies can make funny faces near the statues, without touching, to try to make them smile.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the child is a statue in their chair or on a mat, and moves around the gym with help as a fairy.
- Hearing loss: pair the music stopping with a visual signal, like flicking the lights.
- Skill level: kids who can't stay still yet start as fairy helpers; kids who settle easily keep their eyes closed the whole time.
Learning goals
- Control the body until reaching complete stillness.
- Follow the game rules and take turns.
- Lower energy with slow music and silence.
Equipment for a class of 25
- music: 1
- handkerchief: 6
Teacher tip
Early on, pick restless kids who manage to stay still for a moment; being a fairy motivates them a lot. Keep rounds short so no one gets tired of waiting.
