Sidewalk Chalk Highlight Gallery
Each student draws their best moment from class on the blacktop with sidewalk chalk, then the class tours the gallery in silence and leaves small stars next to drawings they like. It builds reflection, creative expression and recognition between classmates.
How to play
- Give each student a piece of chalk and have them spread out, two big steps apart, in an area of the blacktop away from foot traffic (1 min).
- Ask: "What was your best moment today?" Each student draws it on the ground in a roughly 3-by-3-foot square for 4 minutes.
- On a soft whistle, everyone sets the chalk next to their drawing and stands up.
- Start the gallery walk: moving slowly with hands behind their back, each student looks at at least three classmates' drawings (2 min).
- Next to a drawing they like, each student draws a small star with their chalk, without touching the drawing.
- Students return to their own drawing. Two or three volunteers explain theirs to the class, and everyone puts the chalk back in the bucket (2 min).
Rules
- Draw only in your own space, never over someone else's drawing.
- Walk slowly and silently on the gallery walk, without stepping on drawings.
- Stars go next to drawings, not on top.
- Chalk is for the ground only, never on clothes or skin.
Variations
Easier
Offer three moment ideas with a simple sample drawing.
Standard
Free drawing of the best moment and a gallery walk with stars.
Harder
The drawing includes one word explaining why it was the best moment and one thing they learned.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student draws on cardstock on a clipboard or on a smooth wall at their height.
- Visual impairment: use thick, high-contrast chalk, and a buddy describes the gallery.
- Shyness: the student can skip explaining their drawing aloud and share it only with you.
Learning goals
- Identify and show a positive moment from class.
- Express experiences creatively through drawing.
- Respectfully appreciate classmates' work.
Equipment for a class of 25
- sidewalk chalk: 30
Teacher tip
Pick a smooth area away from recess traffic so the drawings last. Give other teachers a heads-up if you plan to leave the gallery up.
