Secret Buddy Shout-Out
At the start of class, each student secretly draws a classmate's name to watch; during the cool-down, they describe something positive that person did and the class guesses who it is. It builds noticing positive behavior and self-esteem.
How to play
- At the start of class, each student draws a card with a classmate's name and keeps it hidden. Anyone who draws their own name trades it. During class, they watch for things that person does well (prep time).
- For the cool-down, everyone sits in a circle and takes two slow breaths (30 sec).
- A volunteer describes what they saw without saying the name: "My secret buddy picked up the other team's ball and handed it back" (30 sec).
- The class raises hands to guess who it is. After two guesses, the volunteer reveals the name and the secret buddy says "thank you."
- Continue with 6 to 8 volunteers, about 45 seconds per turn.
- Everyone else quietly tells a partner what they noticed about their secret buddy. Cards go back to you (1 min).
Rules
- Share only positive, true actions.
- Keep the name on your card secret until the reveal.
- Listen quietly and raise your hand to guess.
- Every student has someone watching them; nobody is left out.
Variations
Easier
Give hints on what to look for (helping, cheering on, following the rules).
Standard
One secret buddy per student and 6 to 8 reveals in the circle.
Harder
The observer must describe two actions: one about helping and one about effort or skill improvement.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student takes part from their chair; make sure their observer has a clear view of where they play.
- Visual impairment: the student observes by listening, such as for encouraging words, or is paired with someone playing next to them.
- Shyness or autism: the student can share their observation only with their partner in the last step.
Learning goals
- Notice and recognize classmates' positive behavior.
- Describe specific actions accurately and respectfully.
- Build self-esteem by receiving recognition from the class.
Equipment for a class of 25
- name cards: 25
Teacher tip
Prepare cards with only the names of students present that day so everyone has an observer. Remind students halfway through class to keep an eye on their secret buddy.
