Rose, Thorn, Bud Stretch Share
In small groups, each student shares the best part of class (rose), something hard (thorn) and something to grow on (bud), while the group does a different stretch for each part. It builds reflection, managing emotions and goal setting.
How to play
- Explain the three parts and their poses: rose, arms open and reaching overhead; thorn, seated hugging the knees; bud, crouched and slowly growing up to standing (1 min).
- Make groups of four or five seated in small circles spread around the gym.
- Taking turns, each student shares their rose in one sentence while the whole group holds the overhead stretch for 10 seconds.
- The same student shares their thorn as the group hugs their knees and breathes slowly, then their bud as everyone grows up together. Each turn takes about 1 minute.
- Meanwhile, circulate among groups, listening and nudging students to be specific.
- When groups finish, two or three volunteers share their bud with the whole class to remember for next time (1 min).
Rules
- Only the student whose turn it is talks; everyone else listens and stretches.
- Share thorns without blaming anyone by name.
- Stretch without bouncing and without pain.
- What's shared in the group stays in the group.
Variations
Easier
Share only the rose and bud, using sentence starters you provide.
Standard
All three parts with their stretches in groups of four or five.
Harder
The bud must be a specific, measurable goal for next class, and the group suggests how to reach it.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: adapt stretches for a chair (arms up, arms hugging the chest, and a slow arm raise).
- Shyness: the student can write their three sentences and read them, or pass and talk with you at the end.
- Fitness/level: with less mature groups, model your own rose, thorn and bud before starting.
Learning goals
- Identify the positives and challenges of the lesson.
- Express feelings without blaming others.
- Set one personal improvement for next class.
Teacher tip
Thorns can turn into complaints about classmates; steer students back to "what happened to me." This routine works best when you repeat it every week.
