Rock-a-Bye Teddy Blanket
In groups of five, kids hold a piece of fabric by its edges with a stuffed animal in the middle and rock it slowly together like a cradle until it falls asleep. It builds teamwork, coordinated movement and calm.
How to play
- Make groups of five around a piece of fabric spread on the floor, with a stuffed animal in the middle. Everyone kneels and grabs the edge with both hands (30 sec).
- Whisper: "Our stuffed animal is very tired, and we're going to rock it to sleep." Lift the fabric slowly to tummy height without letting it fall.
- Say: "Rock to one side... and to the other." Everyone sways the fabric gently side to side to the rhythm of your voice, ten times (1 min).
- Softly hum a familiar lullaby without words, just "mmm," and the kids hum along while they keep rocking (1.5 min).
- Say: "It's asleep now." They lower the fabric very slowly to the floor and fold it over the stuffed animal like a blanket (30 sec).
- They lie down around the fabric in silence and take three slow breaths "so we don't wake it up" (1 min).
Rules
- Everyone holds the fabric with both hands.
- Rock slowly; don't shake it or toss the stuffed animal.
- Speak very softly so it doesn't wake up.
- If the stuffed animal falls off, place it back gently and keep going.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, use a smaller fabric with three kids, and you direct each movement.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, groups of five rock and hum following the teacher.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, each group decides together when to lower the fabric by looking at each other, without talking.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the child holds the fabric from their chair and the group lifts it to their height.
- Hearing loss: show each sway with your hand raised high, moving side to side.
- Skill level: well-coordinated groups can rock two stuffed animals at once; kids who struggle stand next to you.
Learning goals
- Coordinate movement with classmates.
- Move an object carefully and gently.
- Create a calm, quiet mood as a group.
Equipment for a class of 25
- fabric pieces: 4
- stuffed animals: 4
Teacher tip
Ask families to send a stuffed animal or use the classroom ones; kids get much more involved with a favorite toy. Have the fabric spread out before you start.
