Rainbow Cloth Breeze
In groups of three, one child lies on a mat while the other two hold a colorful piece of fabric and move it slowly above their body so they feel a gentle breeze. It builds relaxation, teamwork and caring for others.
How to play
- Make groups of three and give each one a mat and a colored fabric piece. One child lies on their back with eyes closed and arms by their sides (30 sec).
- The other two kneel on each side holding the fabric by the corners. Show with one group how to lift and lower it very slowly without touching the face.
- Say: "The breeze goes up... and down." They move the fabric to the rhythm of your voice, slowly, about ten times (1 min).
- Say: "The breeze travels from feet to head." The fabric glides slowly above the body, only brushing legs and tummy (30 sec).
- Finally, they let it float down gently onto their friend like a blanket, never over the face, and wait five seconds.
- On a soft tambourine tap, they switch roles until all three have rested (4 min total).
Rules
- The fabric never covers the face.
- Move the fabric slowly; no shaking.
- The child lying down stays still and quiet.
- Wait for the teacher's signal to switch.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, you and a helper wave one big fabric over several kids lying down at once.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, play in groups of three, with two moving the fabric and one resting.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, the resting child asks for a slow breeze, a fast breeze or a blanket, and friends follow the request.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the child feels the breeze from their chair or moves the fabric from the chair with a partner.
- Autism or sensory sensitivity: the child can choose to only move the fabric, or feel the breeze without the fabric touching them.
- Skill level: well-coordinated kids move the fabric with one hand; others hold it alongside you.
Learning goals
- Relax by feeling air and fabric on the body.
- Coordinate with a partner to move the fabric.
- Take care of a resting friend with gentle movements.
Equipment for a class of 25
- colored fabric pieces: 7
- mats: 7
Teacher tip
Set up the groups and put a fabric on each mat before you start. Play soft music and dim the lights; the setting does half the work.
