PE Exit Ticket Drop
Before leaving, each student writes on a card what they learned and draws a face showing how they felt, then drops it in the hoop that matches that face. It builds individual reflection and putting feelings into words.
How to play
- Before class, cut cardstock into quarters and put pencils in a box. Set three hoops by the door, each with a face drawn on a sign: happy, so-so and sad (prep time).
- Students sit spread out on the floor, each with a card and pencil. Take three slow breaths together to settle down (1 min).
- Pose the question of the day, for example: "What did you learn today that you didn't know before?" Each student writes one sentence and puts their name on the back (2 min).
- Under the sentence, each student draws the face that shows how they felt during class.
- Ask two or three volunteers to read their sentence out loud (1 min).
- Line up calmly at the door. On the way out, each student drops their card face down in the matching hoop and hands their pencil to the helper (2 min).
Rules
- Write silently and don't copy your neighbor's sentence.
- There are no right or wrong answers; any real learning counts.
- Cards go in face down to respect privacy.
- Walk to the door without running or stepping on the hoops.
Variations
Easier
Students draw the face plus a simple picture of their favorite activity.
Standard
One learning sentence and one feelings face.
Harder
Add a second question: "What will you do differently next class?"
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student writes on a clipboard from their chair, and a buddy drops the card in if asked.
- Writing difficulties or autism: the student can dictate the sentence to you or choose from pre-written sentence cards.
- Fitness/level: ask more mature students for a sentence that includes a specific example from class.
Learning goals
- Express in writing something learned in class.
- Identify the feeling experienced during the lesson.
- Build the habit of reflecting before leaving PE.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cardstock (quarter sheets): 25
- pencils: 25
- hoops: 3
Teacher tip
Read the cards after class: the sad-face hoop tells you who to check in with privately. Have the cards cut ahead of time so you don't lose minutes.
