Partner Boat Pose: Feet to Feet
In pairs, students sit facing each other, press the soles of their feet together, and hold hands to lift their legs into a shared W-shaped boat. It builds seated balance, core control, and shared breathing to bring heart rates down.
How to play
- Pair students of similar height, one yoga mat per pair; they sit facing each other, knees bent, feet flat, about a hand's width apart (1 min).
- They hold hands outside their knees, press their soles together, and take three slow breaths sitting tall (1 min).
- On a soft whistle, each partner lifts one leg while keeping their soles together; they hold for three breaths and lower (1 min).
- They lift both legs together, feet to feet, and slowly straighten their knees into the W shape; they hold for five breaths, counting quietly together (2 min).
- They lower their legs slowly, let go, and rest on their backs with knees hugged to the chest, rocking side to side (1 min).
- They repeat once more and finish seated, telling their partner what helped them stay balanced (1 min).
Rules
- Partners always lift and lower together, using the words "up" and "down."
- Keep the back long; if it rounds, bend the knees a little.
- Never yank your partner's hands; if someone tips over, both let go gently and put their feet down.
- Stay quiet except for counting breaths.
Variations
Easier
Keep knees bent with shins parallel to the floor instead of straightening the legs.
Standard
Make the W with straight legs and hold it for five breaths together.
Harder
Each partner lets go with one hand and reaches it to the ceiling for three breaths without separating their feet.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student does the boat seated in a chair or with their back against the wall, connecting with a partner by holding hands only.
- Autism or shyness: let the student pick a trusted partner and show a picture of the pose before starting.
- Lower fitness: the student places hands on the floor behind them instead of holding the partner and lifts one leg only.
Learning goals
- Hold a seated balance by coordinating effort with a partner.
- Control slow breathing during a gently demanding pose.
- Communicate with a partner to lift and lower at the same time.
Equipment for a class of 25
- yoga mats: 13
Teacher tip
The usual mistake is straightening the legs before the back is tall; remind them the W is the finish, not the start. Pair by height so feet line up.
