Paper Boat Pond Breathing
Lying on their tummies beside a piece of fabric that becomes a pond, kids blow a paper boat so it sails slowly to the other shore. It builds breath control, patience and calm.
How to play
- Spread several pieces of fabric on the floor, one for every four kids. Say: "These are ponds, and we're going sailing" (30 sec).
- Each child lies on their tummy on one side of the fabric, propped on elbows, with a paper boat in front of their mouth.
- Say: "Breathe in through your nose and blow long and soft, like a morning breeze." Model a slow blow that moves the boat little by little.
- They blow until the boat reaches the other side, where the friend across picks it up and blows it back (2 min).
- Say: "Now the pond is calm": the boat rests and everyone puts their head on their hands and breathes three times without blowing (1 min).
- Sail one more trip and finish with everyone lying on their side looking at their boat (1 min).
Rules
- Move the boat only by blowing, no hands.
- Blow slowly so you don't get dizzy.
- Wait for the boat to arrive before blowing it back.
- It's not a race: the goal is a calm trip.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, use a small ball of tissue paper that moves with very little air.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, partners blow the boat back and forth from shore to shore.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, the boat has to sail down a path between two scarves without leaving it.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: put the fabric on a table and let the child blow from their chair.
- Shy kids: start by blowing next to you on a small two-person pond.
- Skill level: strong blowers use a bigger, heavier boat; kids who tire quickly use a small, light one.
Learning goals
- Adjust the strength and length of the exhale.
- Slow down the heart rate and breathing.
- Share the game with a partner without competing.
Equipment for a class of 25
- paper boats: 20
- fabric pieces: 5
Teacher tip
Fold the boats before class or make them with the kids in the classroom. Build in pauses: blowing a lot in a row can make little ones dizzy.
