Muddy Hippos Slow Roll
On a row of mats that becomes a mud puddle, kids pretend to be hippos wallowing by rolling very slowly sideways, then resting still. It builds controlled log rolling, floor awareness and relaxation.
How to play
- Before you start, push the mats together into one big puddle. Say: "Hippos roll in the mud to cool off" (20 sec).
- Have four or five kids lie on their backs across each mat, an arm's length apart. The rest sit on the shore and watch.
- Say: "Roll slowly toward the window." They roll sideways, arms by their sides or overhead, one or two very slow rolls (30 sec).
- Say: "Now toward the door." They roll back to their spot and lie still on their backs, "drying in the sun" (30 sec).
- Switch groups every minute so everyone rolls several times; kids waiting play the sun and wave their arms slowly (3 min).
- To finish, all the hippos lie in the puddle together, take three deep breaths and get up slowly.
Rules
- Roll slowly; no pushing or rolling over anyone.
- Roll only on the mats.
- Wait for the cue to change direction.
- Kids who are waiting stay seated on the shore.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, roll just a half turn, from back to tummy and back again.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, roll one or two turns each way following the cue.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, roll while holding a beanbag between their feet without dropping it.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: help the child turn from the hips, or have them rock side to side without rolling.
- Autism or touch sensitivity: let the child roll on a mat alone with no one nearby.
- Skill level: kids who roll crooked follow a rope on the floor; skilled kids roll with eyes closed.
Learning goals
- Roll the body slowly and with control.
- Feel the body's contact with the floor.
- Relax after effort with a calm game.
Equipment for a class of 25
- mats: 8
Teacher tip
Leave plenty of space between kids and stand in the middle of the puddle to steer them. If anyone gets dizzy, they sit and play the sun.
