Listen Until the Triangle Fades
You ring a triangle and the kids, seated with eyes closed, keep a hand up while they hear the sound and lower it very slowly once it fades away. It builds careful listening, calm and comfort with silence.
How to play
- Seat the group in a circle or spread out, backs tall and hands on knees (20 sec).
- Ring the triangle once and whisper: "Listen to how it sounds and how it goes away." Repeat twice so they get to know it.
- Say: "Close your eyes. When it rings, raise one hand. When you can't hear it anymore, lower it slowly to your knee."
- Ring the triangle and wait quietly until everyone's hand is down. Repeat four or five times, a little softer each time (2 min).
- For the last few rings, add: "While it rings, breathe in; when it fades, breathe out slowly."
- To finish, whisper a question: who heard another sound in the gym or outside? They answer in tiny voices.
Rules
- No talking while the triangle rings.
- Eyes stay closed until the teacher says so.
- Lower your hand when you stop hearing it, without peeking at others.
- Stay seated and still.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, keep eyes open and watch as you stop the triangle with your hand.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, keep eyes closed and lower the hand when the sound fades.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, ring the triangle from different spots in the gym and have them point to where it's coming from before lowering the hand.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: if the child can't raise an arm, they signal by opening a hand or nodding.
- Hearing loss: seat the child right next to you and let them rest a hand on the triangle or the floor to feel the vibration.
- Skill level: a very focused child can ring the triangle for the group; a child who drifts off sits next to you.
Learning goals
- Keep listening carefully for several seconds.
- Link a sound to a slow hand movement.
- Enjoy silence and calm as a group.

Teacher tip
Always wait for complete silence before ringing; that pause is part of the game. Ring it close to the floor so the sound lasts longer.
