Kind Whispers Tunnel
The class forms a tunnel with two facing lines, and each student walks slowly through it receiving gentle palm touches and whispered encouragement. It builds peer recognition, self-esteem and a positive class climate at the end of the lesson.
How to play
- Form two lines facing each other about 3 feet apart, with every student facing the middle (30 sec).
- Explain the allowed phrases: short and positive, like "nice job," "thanks for helping" or "you got way better." Practice them once in a whisper.
- The first student in one line steps into the tunnel and walks through slowly. Classmates hold out open palms at chest height for gentle touches and whisper their phrase.
- At the end, the student joins the line and becomes part of the tunnel. The next student enters when the one ahead is halfway through (4 min).
- When everyone has gone, you walk through the tunnel last.
- Finish with one deep breath in the lines and a silent cheer by waving hands in the air.
Rules
- Whisper only; no shouting or laughing.
- Touch palms gently, no slapping.
- Anyone who doesn't want contact walks through with arms crossed over the chest and gets whispers and smiles only.
- Walk slowly through the tunnel; no running.
Variations
Easier
Everyone uses one phrase, such as "Way to go!"
Standard
Any positive phrase plus gentle palm touches.
Harder
Each student tells the person walking through one specific thing they saw them do well today.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: widen the tunnel to about 5 feet for a wheelchair, and classmates lower their palms to the student's height.
- Visual impairment: the student walks through with a sighted guide or touches the palms of one line only.
- Shyness or autism: the student can go first alongside you or choose the no-contact option.
Learning goals
- Give and receive positive messages from classmates.
- Boost self-esteem and trust within the class.
- End the lesson in a calm, respectful atmosphere.
Teacher tip
Watch the first few students closely to keep touches gentle; if anyone gets rough, pause and model it again. Students love it when you go through last, and it wraps up the ritual.
