Four Feet in One Hoop Balance
In groups of four, each student places just one foot inside a shared hoop, and the group holds a balance pose together (tree, airplane, dancer), holding on however they choose. It builds cooperative balance and calm decision-making.
How to play
- Groups of four stand around a hoop on the floor; each student places one foot inside it (0.5 min).
- Challenge 1: all four lift their other foot at the same time and hold for five breaths, holding hands or shoulders (1.5 min).
- Challenge 2: group tree; the free foot rests on the ankle or calf, and hands meet overhead above the middle of the hoop (1.5 min).
- Challenge 3: the group chooses and tests its own balance pose with one foot in the hoop and holds it for five breaths (2 min).
- Finish: they sit around the hoop with their feet together in the middle and breathe in unison three times (1.5 min).
Rules
- Only one foot per person may be inside the hoop.
- If someone loses balance, everyone puts their foot down and starts again, no blaming.
- Hold on gently: shoulders, hands, or waist.
- Don't step on the edge of the hoop so it won't slide.
Variations
Easier
Do the challenges in pairs instead of groups of four.
Standard
Do all three challenges in groups of four, holding for five breaths.
Harder
Use a smaller hoop or fit five students in the same hoop.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student joins from a chair with hands inside the hoop, supporting classmates by the arms.
- Shyness: place the student with trusted classmates and let them choose where to hold on.
- Weaker balance: the student may keep the toes of the free foot on the floor.
Learning goals
- Balance on one foot with help from the group.
- Decide as a team how to hold on to keep the pose.
- Breathe calmly during a balance effort.

Teacher tip
Groups that hold shoulders usually last longer; let them discover it and then share it. Space hoops apart so groups don't bump into each other if they wobble.
