Four Corners Reflection Talk
Each corner of the room stands for one option, and students walk slowly to the corner that answers a question about the lesson; there they talk with classmates who agree and a spokesperson sums it up. It builds personal decision-making, discussion and reflection.
How to play
- Put a colored cone in each corner with a card showing one of the lesson's four activities (picture or name). Students start standing in the middle (prep time).
- First question: "In which activity did you feel your best?" Each student walks slowly, heel to toe, to their chosen corner (30 sec).
- In each corner, students quietly discuss for 1 minute why they chose it and pick a spokesperson.
- Each spokesperson sums up the discussion in one sentence while the other corners listen seated (1 min).
- Repeat with two more questions: "In which one did you help others most?" and "Which one would you like to repeat to get better?" Switch spokespeople each time (4 min).
- Everyone walks slowly back to the middle and takes two deep breaths together before leaving.
Rules
- Pick your own corner; don't just follow your friends.
- Walk slowly; no running or pushing.
- Talk quietly in your corner and listen to everyone.
- If someone is alone in a corner, the teacher joins them to talk.
Variations
Easier
Ask only one question, and you choose the spokesperson.
Standard
Three questions with a short discussion and a new spokesperson each time.
Harder
The corners become statements (strongly agree, agree, disagree, strongly disagree) about fair play during the lesson.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: use a smaller area so corners are closer, or a buddy walks with the student.
- Visual impairment: say out loud what each corner is and mark it with a different sound.
- Shyness or autism: the student can take part without being spokesperson and gets the questions ahead of time.
Learning goals
- Make a personal decision about their experience in class.
- Discuss with classmates and explain their reasons.
- Summarize and share the discussion with the class.
Equipment for a class of 25
- colored cones: 4
- cardstock signs with activity pictures: 4
Teacher tip
If one corner fills up with a friend group, ask several students their reason so they really reflect. The cards can be reused throughout the unit.
