Four-Corner Ultimate
An Ultimate variation with no end zones; instead, there are four squares in the corners of the field where either team can score. Students have to switch the field, read which corner is open, and cut quickly.
How to play
- Cone off a 100 x 100 ft field with a 13 x 13 ft square in each corner; form teams of 5 in pinnies, with two teams playing while two others use a second field (3 min).
- Start with the disc in the middle; no walking with the disc, and 8 seconds to throw.
- A point is scored by catching the disc inside any corner square, but you can't score in the same corner twice in a row.
- If the disc drops, goes out, or is intercepted, possession switches on the spot; after each point, the other team restarts from the middle.
- Play 5-minute games and switch opponents (15 min, 3 games).
- At the end, each team shares the signal they used to call out the open corner (2 min).
Rules
- No contact: no ripping the disc away and no bumping when jumping.
- Nobody may wait inside a corner square for more than 3 seconds.
- Self-officiating: the fouled player makes the call.
- Safety: only one marker on the thrower, and nobody dives.
Variations
Easier
Use a soft disc, allow repeat corners, and give 10 seconds to throw.
Standard
Play 5v5 with four corners and an 8-second count.
Harder
A corner point only counts if caught off a forehand throw.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: throw from the middle as the unmarked starter of every possession.
- Shyness: assign a "corner caller" role to encourage communication.
- Fitness level: shrink the field to 80 x 80 ft for students who need less running.
Learning goals
- Switch play toward the least-defended corner.
- Cut with changes of speed to get open for the disc.
- Self-officiate honestly.
Equipment for a class of 25
- frisbees: 4
- cones: 32
- pinnies: 20
Teacher tip
Corners force students to see the whole field; encourage throws to the corner away from the crowd of defenders. Keep self-officiating from slowing the game down too much.
