Feather Float Around the Circle
Kids sit in a circle, gently blow a feather resting on their open palm, then carefully pass it to the friend next to them. It builds slow, soft breathing, calm and gentle care of a delicate object.
How to play
- Seat the group in a circle on the floor, legs crossed. Give each child a feather and have them rest it on an open palm (30 sec).
- Say: "Breathe in through your nose, like you're smelling a flower." Model it slowly so they copy you.
- Say: "Now blow very softly so the feather dances but doesn't fall." Do five slow blows together (1 min).
- On a soft tap of the tambourine or a clap, everyone passes their feather to the friend on the right using only fingers, no blowing (1 min).
- Once everyone has a new feather, do three soft blows and pass again. Go around three or four times (2 min).
- To finish, say: "One big blow and the feather flies to the middle." They let it go and sit still watching it fall.
Rules
- Blow softly and never toward a friend's face.
- Pass the feather by hand, no throwing.
- Stay seated in your spot in the circle.
- If the feather falls, pick it up slowly and keep going.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, they just blow the feather on their own hand without passing it.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, alternate three soft blows with one pass to the right.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, they keep the feather floating in the air for a few seconds with soft blows before passing it.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the child joins from a chair or seated with support; a friend places the feather in their hand.
- Autism or sensory sensitivity: offer a spot next to you, and let them blow a scarf instead if the feather bothers them.
- Skill level: strong blowers get a bigger feather; kids who struggle to control their breath get a smaller, lighter one.
Learning goals
- Control a soft, long exhale.
- Bring energy levels down after active play.
- Take care of and share a delicate object.

Teacher tip
Model an exaggerated, slow blow first; kids copy it far better than an explanation. Keep the feathers ready in a box so you can hand them out in seconds.
