Disc Toss Scoring Zones
In groups of three, students learn the backhand disc throw and send the disc into scoring zones marked with flat disc cones and hoops at different distances. The activity builds throwing technique, accuracy, and choosing a target based on personal skill.
How to play
- On one end of the field, mark a throwing line and three zones of flat disc cones at 15, 25, and 35 feet (1, 2, and 3 points); place a hoop in each zone that doubles the points (3 min).
- Teach the backhand: stand sideways, disc flat at belly-button height, arm crossed toward the opposite shoulder, then release by extending the arm toward the target (2 min).
- Practice in groups of three without scoring: two throw in turns while the third retrieves and rolls the disc back; rotate every 4 throws (5 min).
- Scoring game: each student throws 3 discs, choosing a zone, and adds up their points; the disc must come to rest inside the zone (6 min).
- Final group challenge (4 min): the group must score 15 points together in as few throws as possible.
Rules
- No one walks into the zones while anyone in their group is holding a disc.
- Throw only from the line and toward the zones.
- A disc that lands outside every zone scores zero but doesn't lose points.
- Walk to collect the disc; never run to catch it in the air.
Variations
Easier
Zones are at 10, 15, and 20 feet, and forehand throws are allowed.
Standard
Zones at 15, 25, and 35 feet with backhand throws.
Harder
Only discs that land in a hoop count, thrown with the non-dominant hand.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student throws from a wheelchair to closer zones; the trunk rotation is still useful.
- Autism or shyness: the student first practices with a trusted partner off to the side before joining the scoring game.
- Advanced students: they must call their zone before throwing and only score if they land in it.
Learning goals
- Throw a backhand with the disc flat and the arm extended.
- Choose a target zone based on personal skill.
- Work together in a group to reach a shared goal.
Equipment for a class of 25
- flying discs: 18
- hoops: 9
- flat disc cones: 30
Teacher tip
The most common mistake is releasing the disc tilted so it curves into the ground; cue "flat like a table." On windy days, throw with the wind or use foam discs.
