Cooperative Tchoukball Rebound Chain
Groups throw at a tchoukball rebounder and must catch the rebound before it bounces, chaining throws without a miss. It builds accurate throwing at the frame, catching, and cooperation as a foundation for tchoukball.
How to play
- Set up the rebounders with a 10-foot semicircular no-go zone marked with cones in front of each one. Groups of 6 per rebounder, lined up behind the zone.
- Round 1 (4 min): the first student throws two-handed at the rebounder from outside the zone, and the next in line catches the rebound. The thrower goes to the back of the line. Count consecutive catches.
- Round 2 (4 min): whoever catches the rebound throws straight back at the frame with no more than three steps, and the next student catches. Keep the chain going.
- Round 3 (4 min): the group spreads out in a semicircle and the thrower calls the name of who should catch, aiming so the rebound reaches them.
- Round 4 (4 min): record challenge. Each catch without a bounce scores 1, and any rebound that bounces resets the chain to zero. The group writes down its best score.
- Between rounds, take 30 seconds to talk about where to hit the frame: high sends the ball high and far, low sends it short.
Rules
- Nobody steps inside the no-go zone in front of the rebounder.
- Throw with moderate force and never toward a classmate who isn't looking.
- No more than three steps while holding the ball.
- Only one throw at a time per rebounder.
Variations
Easier
Allow one bounce before the catch and throw from closer.
Standard
A chain of throws and catches with no bounce.
Harder
Catch the rebound and pass to a teammate before throwing, with a maximum of three passes.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: throw from a wheelchair at a shorter distance; the group aims rebounds to the student's position.
- Visual impairment: use a bright or beeper ball and call 'coming!' on each throw.
- Nervous catchers: use a softer ball and allow catching by hugging it to the chest.
Learning goals
- Throw at the rebounder while adjusting the rebound angle.
- Catch the ball off the rebound before it bounces.
- Work with the group to improve a shared score.
Equipment for a class of 25
- tchoukball rebounder: 4
- soft ball: 4
- cones: 16
Teacher tip
If you only have one rebounder, set up wall-throw stations and rotate. Show the angle with an example before starting, because at first almost everyone throws at the center of the net.
