Colpbol Keep-Away Four vs Two
A small-square keep-away game where four attackers pass the ball by striking it with the hand, as in colpbol, while two defenders try to intercept. It builds one-hand striking, getting open, and quick decisions before moving on to games.
How to play
- Use cones to mark 4 squares about 25 by 25 feet. In each, 6 students: 4 attackers on the sides and 2 defenders in pinnies in the middle (any extra student keeps count and rotates in first).
- Review the colpbol basics: the ball is struck with the hand or forearm, never caught, and no one may touch it twice in a row. It can bounce on the floor between passes.
- Attackers strike the ball to each other while moving along their side of the square. Every 5 passes in a row without a defender touching it scores 1 point.
- If a defender touches the ball or it leaves the square, the attacker who made the last hit swaps pinnies with the defender who has been in the middle longest.
- Play 3 blocks of 4 minutes. Between blocks, take 1 minute for each group to talk about opening passing lanes.
- In the last block, add a rule: a pass only counts if it travels below the defender's waist, to practice low bounce passes.
Rules
- No catching the ball and no hitting it twice in a row.
- Defenders may only touch the ball, never the attackers.
- No kicking and no hitting the ball at anyone's face.
- Defenders must switch after 90 seconds even without a steal.
Variations
Easier
Play five vs one or allow the same player two touches in a row.
Standard
Four vs two with colpbol rules and 5 passes to score.
Harder
Shrink the square to 20 by 20 feet or allow at most one bounce between passes.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: hold a fixed corner as an attacker and strike from the wheelchair; defenders can't enter the 3 feet around them.
- Visual impairment: use a beeper ball or a bright-colored ball and call the name before passing.
- Lower fitness: make that group's square smaller or play with more attackers.
Learning goals
- Strike the ball with the hand accurately to a teammate.
- Move to create open passing lanes.
- Decide quickly who to pass to under defensive pressure.
Equipment for a class of 25
- colpbol ball: 4
- cones: 16
- pinnies: 8
Teacher tip
The usual mistake is hitting too hard without looking; ask for soft bounce passes. Keep time on the defender switches so nobody gets stuck in the middle.
