Closing Huddle with a Class Motto
The whole class forms a huddle with hands stacked in the middle, names one group win and repeats its class motto, getting quieter each time down to a whisper and silence. It builds belonging, emotional closure and a smooth shift into calm.
How to play
- Students form a tight circle, shoulder to shoulder. With a large class, make two circles, one inside the other (30 sec).
- Each student reaches one arm into the middle and rests their hand on a classmate's, stacking hands into a huddle.
- Name one group win from today in a single sentence: "Nobody got left out today" (30 sec).
- Everyone repeats the class motto three times: first in a normal voice, then softer, then in a whisper (1 min).
- After the whisper, hold five seconds of complete silence with eyes closed and one slow breath.
- Hands rise slowly toward the ceiling like a flower opening, and students leave with a smile (1 min).
Rules
- Rest hands on top without squeezing or pushing down.
- Never shout the motto, not even the first time.
- No talking or moving during the silence.
- Anyone who prefers not to touch can hold their hand close without contact.
Variations
Easier
The motto is a single word, like the class or team name.
Standard
A short motto repeated three times, getting quieter down to silence.
Harder
Each week a different student picks the group win and explains it before the motto.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: build the huddle at wheelchair height while others crouch or kneel.
- Hearing impairment: lower your other hand as the volume drops so the cue is visible.
- Autism or noise sensitivity: the student stands next to you and can join only for the final gesture.
Learning goals
- Feel part of a class that looks out for each other and celebrates wins.
- Control voice volume and shift from high energy to calm.
- Recognize positive team actions from the lesson.
Teacher tip
Have the class agree on the motto together in the first week so they own it. Keep the ritual the same every time; students learn that this is how PE ends.
