Campout Night Yoga Story
In groups of four, students live a campout night through yoga: they pitch the tent with their bodies, light the campfire, watch the owl and the fireflies, and fall asleep in their sleeping bags. It blends group poses with a final relaxation.
How to play
- Make groups of four with their yoga mats together in a cross shape; each group is a campsite, and the teacher narrates that night is falling (0.5 min).
- "Pitch the tent": each student does downward dog, and the group inches their hands in until all four tents touch; three breaths (1.5 min).
- "Light the campfire": seated cross-legged in a circle, they rub their hands to warm them and hold them toward the fire in the middle (1 min).
- "The owl keeps watch": seated, they slowly turn the head side to side, then the torso, with eyes wide open (1 min).
- "Fireflies come out": lying on their backs, they lift arms and legs and wiggle their fingers like tiny lights, then let them drop gently (1 min).
- "Climb into the sleeping bag": they lie on their side hugging their knees, close their eyes, and listen to the forest sounds the teacher names (2 min).
Rules
- Each group keeps its tent from collapsing: hands move closer without pushing.
- The fire is imaginary, and nobody leans into the middle further than the person across.
- No talking in the sleeping bag; raise a finger if you need something.
- Roll to your side and get up slowly.
Variations
Easier
Pitch the tent individually without bringing hands together with the group.
Standard
Do every scene in groups of four with three breaths in each pose.
Harder
Each group invents one more night animal and teaches its pose to the class before bedtime.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student makes the tent seated by joining hands overhead and does the rest of the story with arms and head.
- Shyness: place the student with trusted classmates; their role can be putting out the campfire at the end.
- Lower fitness: the tent can be done with knees on the floor.
Learning goals
- Cool down with yoga poses inside a shared story.
- Coordinate with a group to form a joint shape.
- Listen for and recognize sounds in silence and stillness.
Equipment for a class of 25
- yoga mats: 25
Teacher tip
The group tent gets giggles when someone wobbles; demo it first with a model group. Name slow, quiet sounds for the ending (crickets, wind, a creek).
