Belly Pillow Breathing Chain
Lying on the floor in a zigzag, each student rests their head on a classmate's belly and feels it rise and fall with their breathing. The group tries to breathe at the same pace and hold back contagious giggles. It works on breathing, trust, and managing emotions.
How to play
- Groups of six put their yoga mats together; the first student lies on the back, and the second lies crosswise with their head resting gently on the first student's belly (1 min).
- Continue until the zigzag chain is formed; the last student has nobody on their belly and rests their head on the previous classmate (1 min).
- Everyone closes their eyes and feels their head rise and fall with a partner's breathing; ten silent breaths (1.5 min).
- The first student in the chain sets the pace, breathing in for four and out for four while counting softly, and the rest try to follow (1 min).
- If giggles break out, let them happen and restart the count until the group gets ten calm breaths (0.5 min).
- Break the chain starting with the last student; each rolls to the side and sits up slowly (1 min).
Rules
- Heads rest on the belly, never on the chest or neck.
- No tickling or bouncing your belly on purpose.
- Anyone who doesn't want to rest their head can place a hand on the partner's belly instead.
- Wait for the person on top to get up before you sit up.
Variations
Easier
Do it in pairs: one partner rests their head, then switch.
Standard
Form the chain of six and reach ten synced breaths.
Harder
Link every chain in the class into one and breathe all together.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student sits in a chair at the end of the chain with a hand on the last classmate's belly.
- Autism or touch sensitivity: the student joins with a hand instead of the head or sets the pace sitting to the side.
- Shyness: the student chooses their spot in the chain and who to be next to.
Learning goals
- Feel another person's breathing and adjust their own.
- Manage giggles and return to calm.
- Trust the group during gentle contact.
Equipment for a class of 25
- yoga mats: 25
Teacher tip
Always ask permission before starting and make the hand option visible to everyone. Giggles are part of the game: don't punish them, use them to practice getting calm again.
