Balloon Squeeze Partner Poses
In pairs, students hold a balloon between their foreheads, backs, or palms and move slowly through several yoga poses without dropping it. It forces slow movement, awareness of a partner, and calm breathing to close class.
How to play
- Pairs get one inflated balloon; they face each other and hold it between their palms (0.5 min).
- Pose 1: mountain. They raise their arms together with the balloon between their palms and lower slowly, three times, breathing (1 min).
- Pose 2: standing back to back with the balloon between their backs, they lower together into a half squat and rise (1.5 min).
- Pose 3: seated facing each other in butterfly pose with the balloon between their foreheads, they lean in slightly and take three breaths (1.5 min).
- Pose 4: lying on their backs head to head, they hold the balloon in their hands above their faces and pass it back and forth slowly (1.5 min).
- Finish: each student rests the balloon on the belly and watches it rise and fall with each breath (1 min).
Rules
- No holding the balloon with fingers; it stays pressed between bodies.
- If it drops, pick it up slowly and restart that pose.
- Don't squeeze hard enough to pop it.
- Each pair stays in its own space away from others.
Variations
Easier
Do only the palm-to-palm poses.
Standard
Link all four poses without dropping the balloon.
Harder
Move from pose to pose without letting go, shifting the balloon from palms to backs to foreheads.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student does the palm and forehead poses seated in a chair with a partner at the same height.
- Visual impairment: the balloon gives a clear touch reference, and the partner announces each change.
- Latex allergy or fear of balloons: use a large soft ball instead.
Learning goals
- Move slowly with body control alongside a partner.
- Do simple yoga poses while holding an object without hands.
- Calm down by watching the breath.
Equipment for a class of 25
- balloons: 15
Teacher tip
Keep spare balloons on hand and check for latex allergies first. The balloon is a calm meter: if it keeps dropping, slow your cues down even more.
