Baby Bird in the Nest
In pairs, one child becomes a nest, wrapping arms and legs around a partner who curls up inside like a baby bird, then rocks them gently to sleep. It builds trust, caring touch and relaxation.
How to play
- Make pairs and give each pair a mat. Say: "One of you is the baby bird and one is the cozy nest" (30 sec).
- The nest sits with legs apart. The baby bird sits in front, facing away, and curls into a ball with knees to chest.
- Say: "The nest hugs the baby bird." The nest wraps arms gently around the partner, without squeezing hard (30 sec).
- Say: "The wind rocks the nest." The pair sways slowly side to side while you count softly to twenty (1 min).
- Say: "The baby bird is asleep." The nest stops rocking and both take three slow breaths, feeling each other breathe (30 sec).
- On a soft tambourine tap, partners switch roles and play again; at the end, each pair says thank you (2.5 min).
Rules
- The nest hugs gently and never squeezes.
- Sway slowly; don't tip over onto the floor.
- If the baby bird says "stop," stop right away.
- Whisper voices only.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, the baby bird lies on its side on the mat and the nest just rubs its back.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, the nest hugs and rocks the seated baby bird.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, the baby bird chooses a slow sway, a hummed lullaby or just quiet.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the pair sets up by the child's chair, and the nest hugs the shoulders from behind.
- Autism or touch sensitivity: the child can hug a pillow or stuffed animal as the baby bird, or be their own nest by hugging their knees.
- Skill level: kids who tend to be rough start as the baby bird; very gentle kids can be the nest for a smaller classmate.
Learning goals
- Trust a partner and let yourself be cared for.
- Give and receive touch gently and respectfully.
- Relax with slow rocking.

Teacher tip
Choose the pairs yourself with friendships in mind, and respect any child who doesn't want touch. Demonstrate with one child in front of everyone first.
