How to play
- The teacher demonstrates with three big upside-down cups and a sock ball hidden under one (2 min).
- In pairs on the floor, the hider puts the ball under a cup and the partner finds it without any cups moving (2 min).
- Now the hider swaps just two cups, very slowly, sliding them along the floor (3 min).
- Switch roles and keep playing (3 min).
- Try moving all three cups slowly in a circle while the partner keeps watching (1 min).
- Stack the cups inside each other with the ball on top, like an ice cream cone (1 min).
Rules
- I move cups slowly so my friend can follow.
- Cups slide on the floor; they don't get lifted.
- I lift just one cup, with one hand.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, use only two cups and don't move them at first; then try one swap.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, use three cups and two or three slow swaps.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, use three cups and more swaps; the guesser can also hide the ball while the partner covers their eyes.
Adaptations
- Visual impairment: use cups in very different colors and a ball with a bell; the child may touch the cups to feel the weight.
- Limited mobility: play on a table at wheelchair height.
- Autism: the teacher is the partner at first and says each move out loud ("this one goes here").
Learning goals
- Track a moving object with the eyes.
- Move objects with the hands slowly and with control.
- Take turns hiding and guessing.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Plastic cups: 39
- Sock balls: 13
Teacher tip
Cups must be opaque and big enough for the ball to fit easily. Hiders tend to move cups super fast, so model it with exaggerated slowness.
