How to play
- The teacher sets five colored cones in a row a few yards from the group and we look at them, naming each color (1 min).
- We turn around, cover our eyes and count to five while the teacher moves one cone (1 min).
- We turn back, look, and when the teacher claps, we all run to touch the cone that moved and return to the line (4 min).
- Now the teacher can take a cone away, add one or swap two (4 min).
- A child plays teacher and changes something while the others aren't looking (2 min).
Rules
- Eyes covered while the cone gets moved.
- Look first, run after the clap.
- We all run to touch it; there are no winners.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, use three cones and a very obvious change: take one away.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, use five cones and move them around.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, arrange cones in a pattern (circle, cross) and make small changes, like turning or tipping one over.
Adaptations
- Child who uses a wheelchair: goes to touch the cone with a buddy, or points from the line and the others run on their signal.
- Child with low vision: use big cones close together, or objects with different textures they can touch.
- Impulsive child: is in charge of the starting clap.
Learning goals
- Remember where several objects are placed.
- Spot changes in the surroundings by sight.
- Run out and back on a signal.
Equipment for a class of 25
- conos de colores: 8
Teacher tip
Give them a few seconds to look in silence before running: if they take off right away, they just follow the first runner instead of looking.
