Which Bucket Is the Ball Sleeping Under?
In small groups, one child hides a ball under one of three upside-down buckets, slides them around slowly, and the others follow with their eyes to see where it went to sleep. It builds visual attention, memory and turn-taking.
How to play
- The teacher shows the game: put the ball under a bucket, slowly swap the buckets around and ask, “Where is it sleeping?” (2 min).
- Groups of 4 sit in a circle with three buckets and one ball: one child hides it without moving the buckets and the others point (2 min).
- Now the hider slowly swaps two buckets while singing, “The ball goes off to sleep, where can it be?” (3 min).
- Whoever guesses right lifts the bucket carefully and becomes the next hider (3 min).
- Final round: everyone closes their eyes, the teacher hides the ball under a bucket somewhere in the room and we crawl to find it (2 min).
Rules
- Hide and move the buckets slowly, no tricks.
- Wait for the song to end before you point.
- Everyone gets a turn to hide.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, use two buckets in different colors and don't move them, just hide and guess.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, use three matching buckets and one swap.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, use three buckets with two or three swaps and name the position in words: “the one on the left,” “the middle one.”
Adaptations
- Visual impairment: use high-contrast buckets and a ball with a bell that rings when the bucket moves.
- Autism: start as an observer next to the teacher and, when ready, hide the ball using the same sequence.
- Limited mobility: play on a table at the child's height with smaller buckets.
Learning goals
- Track a moving object with the eyes.
- Remember where a hidden object is.
- Take turns hiding and guessing.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Large plastic buckets: 18
- Medium balls: 6
Teacher tip
This is a good calm main activity for rainy days or after a busy recess. A common mistake is moving the buckets too fast, so teach them to move “like a turtle.”
