Wheelbarrow Race
Pairs race short distances in the classic wheelbarrow position: one partner walks on their hands while the other holds their legs. Students build upper-body and core strength, coordination and trust between partners.
How to play
- Pair students of similar size and line pairs up behind a start line with lanes marked 5–8 m long (1 min).
- Demonstrate the grip: the walker starts in push-up position and the holder lifts the legs at the knees or thighs, never at the ankles (2 min).
- Practice run: each pair walks 3 m slowly, then swaps roles so both try walking and holding (2 min).
- Race 1: on the whistle, pairs go to the far line; the walker sets the pace and the holder follows. Swap roles for the way back (2 min).
- Run 2–3 more heats, swapping roles each time and giving 30 seconds of rest between heats (4 min).
- Finish with a wrist and shoulder shake-out and ask which partner role felt harder (1 min).
Rules
- Hold your partner at the knees or thighs, never at the feet or ankles.
- The walker sets the speed; the holder never pushes.
- If arms give out, the walker says 'down' and the holder lowers the legs gently to the ground.
- Stay in your lane until your pair crosses the finish line.
Variations
Easier
Shorten the lane to 3–4 m and allow the holder to support at the hips for a lower-effort position.
Standard
Race 5–8 m lanes with the hold at the knees, swapping roles at the turnaround.
Harder
Weave the wheelbarrow through a line of cones or race a two-pair relay with a handoff.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility or wrist problems: the student acts as starter and lane judge, or performs a seated push-and-pull partner exercise instead.
- Shy students or those uncomfortable with contact: let them choose their partner and allow a 'plank walk' with no holder.
- Fitness level: lower-strength students hold at the hips and cover shorter distances; stronger students can go farther.
Learning goals
- Develop upper-body and core strength using body weight.
- Coordinate movements with a partner at a shared pace.
- Practice safe partner support techniques.
Teacher tip
Pair by size and strength, and keep distances short; arms tire fast at this age. A soft surface like grass is ideal if the blacktop is rough on hands.

Accuracy Circuit with Cloth Targets
Accuracy stations with cloth targets on the floor and on the wall, where students toss bean bags and score points by ring. They work on throwing accuracy and matching force to distance.
Adapted Beach Handball
An adapted beach handball game with a soft ball: no dribbling, three steps with the ball, and double points for spectacular goals such as jump or spin shots. It develops throwing, passing and team play in a fun, safe way.
Adapted Volleyball
A simplified volleyball game with a soft foam ball where students may catch and toss the ball before learning to hit it, keeping rallies going over the net. It develops striking, teamwork, and court positioning without the fear of a hard ball.
Aerobics Stations
Students rotate through five aerobics stations to upbeat music, doing step-ups, jumping jacks, high knees, skipping and dance moves. The activity builds cardiovascular endurance and coordination at each student's own intensity.
Agility Ladder Circuit
Small groups rotate through agility ladders laid on the blacktop, practicing footwork patterns from one foot per square to lateral and in-out steps. It develops quick feet, rhythm, coordination and agility.
Animal Kingdom Circuit
Each station represents an animal, and students move like it: frog jumps, bear walks, crab walks and kangaroo hops. The circuit works the whole body, builds strength and coordination, and encourages creativity.
