We Draw Our Town in Chalk
In small teams, children draw their own chalk town together: streets, crosswalks, parking lots and roundabouts, and then they open it by driving tricycles and hoop cars through it. It's a shared movement project built on teamwork.
How to play
- In a circle we decide what a town has: streets, crosswalks, parking, houses. The teacher has marked with cones where each thing goes (2 min).
- In teams of four or five, each team draws one part: one does the long streets, another the crosswalks, another the parking lot, another the houses (6 min).
- Walk through the town while each team shows what they drew (2 min).
- Grand opening: some ride tricycles with helmets and others use hoops to drive the streets (4 min).
- Swap vehicles and take another drive around town (3 min).
- Group photo in the middle of town and a round of applause for every team (1 min).
Rules
- We only draw in our own part.
- We share the chalk.
- We walk while drawing, no running.
- We take care of what others drew.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, the teacher draws guide lines and they trace and color them in.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, they draw as a team starting from the cone markers.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, each team names its street and draws a made-up sign for it.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a child who can't draw on the ground uses chalk taped to a long stick or draws signs on cardboard at a table.
- Autism: give a clear, repetitive task, like drawing the crosswalk stripes, with a model next to them.
- Visual impairment: use thick, high-contrast chalk and hand-over-hand guidance from a friend.
Learning goals
- Work together on a shared project.
- Coordinate movement while drawing on the ground.
- Use the town they made to play at road safety.
Equipment for a class of 25

- Cones: 8
- Tricycles: 6
- Helmets: 6

Teacher tip
Bring thick outdoor chalk and assign zones beforehand so teams don't trample each other's work. If you run out of time, leave the town for next session: they'll be even more excited to use it.
