Wall Bar Traffic Light Climb

Vertical climbing on the wall bars with three heights marked by colored ribbons (green, yellow, and red) that each student picks based on confidence. It builds arm and leg coordination, the three-points-of-contact rule, and decision-making about personal risk.

How to play

  1. Tie ribbons on the wall bars: green about 3 feet up, yellow about 5 feet, and red about 6.5 feet, and cover the base with mats. Groups of 3 per wall bar section.
  2. Explain three points of contact: two hands and one foot, or two feet and one hand, always on the bars. Move only one arm or leg at a time.
  3. Round 1 (4 min): climb to the green ribbon, tap it, and climb down rung by rung. The next climber starts when the previous one has both feet on the mat.
  4. Round 2 (5 min): each student calls out a color before climbing. Reaching it earns 1, 2, or 3 points depending on the color. Teammates cheer and watch for contact points.
  5. Round 3 (5 min): climb to your color and come down a different way: facing out for two rungs or zigzagging down across two empty sections.
  6. At the end, students add up their points and set a new color goal for next class, with no pressure to go higher.
