Wall-Assisted Handstand Progression
A handstand progression in groups of three using the wall for support: from walking the feet up the wall to a kick-up handstand with spotters. Students build arm strength, a tight core, and safe spotting habits with partners.
How to play
- Place mats flush against the wall and put students in groups of three: one performer and two spotters. Each group gets about 5 feet of wall.
- Step 1 (4 min): the frozen wheelbarrow. Hands on the mat, a partner holds the feet; hold 10 seconds with a straight body. Rotate.
- Step 2 (5 min): back to the wall, hands about a hand-length from it, walk the feet up the wall as high as comfortable, hold 5 seconds, and walk back down. Spotters watch from the sides.
- Step 3 (5 min): facing the wall, kick up into a handstand with one leg; each spotter stands to one side and catches a thigh to slow and steady the body. Hold 3 to 5 seconds.
- Step 4 (4 min): group challenge. Add up how many total seconds the three of you can hold the handstand of your choice (step 2 or 3) in 3 attempts each.
- Each step ends with a role swap so everyone performs and spots the same number of times.
Rules
- Come down one leg at a time; never fall over backward.
- Arms locked and eyes on your hands the whole time.
- Spotters hold the thighs, never the ankles or head.
- If your arms start to bend, say so and come down right away.
Variations
Easier
Stick with the frozen wheelbarrow and walking the feet only to bench height.
Standard
Complete steps 2 and 3 with two spotters.
Harder
Handstand with one spotter and a controlled come-down into a forward roll on the mat.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: three-point balances on hands and knees on the mat, holding 10 seconds.
- Shyness or fear: always start with step 2, which students control with their own feet, and never require step 3.
- Lower fitness: cut hold times to 3 seconds and rest between attempts.
Learning goals
- Hold an inverted balance with an aligned body and straight arms.
- Apply safe spotting techniques with a partner.
- Work past the fear of being upside down step by step.
Equipment for a class of 25
- mats: 9
- wall space
Teacher tip
Make sure mats are tight to the wall and students come down one leg at a time; check step 3 group by group and never let anyone try it without spotters.
