Up and Down the River Flag Rugby 2v2
Two-on-two flag rugby mini games on small fields: after each round, winning pairs move up a field and losing pairs move down. With so few players, everyone carries the ball, passes backward, and defends by pulling flags on every play.
How to play
- Cone off six 50 x 26 ft mini fields in a row, each with a 6-ft try zone at both ends; form pairs wearing flag belts and put two pairs on each field (3 min).
- The attacking pair starts from its end line; the ball may only go backward or sideways, and a try is scored by grounding it in the opposite zone.
- If a carrier's flag is pulled, they stop and pass within 3 seconds; on the second flag pull, possession switches and the other pair attacks from its end.
- Play 2-minute rounds; on the whistle, the winning pair moves up a field and the losing pair moves down, with ties settled by rock, paper, scissors (12 min, 6 rounds).
- At the end, give a shout-out to the pairs that climbed the most fields and to those who cheered their opponents best (3 min).
Rules
- No contact: no pushing, grabbing, or guarding flags with your hand.
- Forward pass: the ball goes to the other pair.
- Pulled flags are handed back, never thrown.
- Safety: keep 6 ft between fields, and stop play if a ball rolls onto another field.
Variations
Easier
Possession only switches after three flag pulls, and the field widens to 33 ft.
Standard
Play 2v2, keeping possession until the second flag pull, in 2-minute rounds.
Harder
Possession switches on the first flag pull, and a try only counts after a pass.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: play on the nearest, fixed field, where defenders touch the ball instead of pulling flags.
- Shyness or low confidence: keep the same partner and praise effort as well as points.
- Fitness level: add a 1-minute active break every two rounds.
Learning goals
- Run with the ball and pass backward in tight spaces.
- Defend as a pair by pulling flags without contact.
- Handle each round's wins and losses with good sportsmanship.
Equipment for a class of 25
- foam football: 6
- flag belts: 24
- cones: 28
Teacher tip
The up-and-down format evens out skill levels within a few rounds. Remind the top-field winners not to gloat: there are points for cheering too.
