Underhand Serve Island Challenge
In teams, students practice the underhand volleyball serve, trying to land the ball on "islands" of hoops spread around the other side. Students work on serving technique, accuracy and adjusting force to distance.
How to play
- Use 3 mini-volleyball nets at about 6.5 ft. On each far side, spread 5 islands (2 hoops side by side) and mark serving lines with cones at 13, 16 and 20 ft. Teams of 4 per side (3 min).
- 1-minute demo: opposite foot forward, ball in the non-hitting hand at waist height, hit with the palm from low to high.
- Each player serves 3 balls from the chosen line, then goes to retrieve on the other side. An island hit scores 1 point from 13 ft, 2 from 16 ft and 3 from 20 ft.
- When a team hits an island, it removes one hoop from it; the team that clears the other side of islands or scores more in 8 minutes wins.
- Wrap up for 2 minutes: which distance did you pick, and why?
Rules
- Always serve from behind your chosen line.
- A ball that clips the net and lands on an island is worth half (rounded up).
- Safety: the receiving team retrieves balls only after the serving set is done.
Variations
Easier
Two-hand toss serve or serve from 10 ft.
Standard
Underhand serve from 13, 16 or 20 ft.
Harder
Overhand serve, or islands made of a single hoop.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student serves from a closer line, and a partner retrieves for them.
- Visual impairment: high-contrast hoops and a verbal description of each result.
- Skill level: a foam ball or lighter trainer volleyball.
Learning goals
- Perform the underhand serve with correct technique.
- Adjust hitting force to the chosen distance.
- Choose a challenge that fits your own level.
Equipment for a class of 25
- volleyball: 12
- hoops: 30
- net: 3
- cones: 18
Teacher tip
Spread servers side by side along the line so everyone serves at once with no waiting. The typical mistake is tossing the ball up before hitting it; it should be struck out of the hand.
