Toxic Waste Transfer
Each group must move a bucket full of "toxic" balls from one off-limits circle to another without touching it or stepping inside, using only an elastic hoop with ropes tied to it. Students practice planning, decision-making, and coordinating their pulling force.
How to play
- Make 5 groups of 5. Each group gets an elastic hoop with five 10-foot ropes tied to it and a bucket of balls inside a cone circle about 6 feet across.
- Each student holds the end of one rope. By pulling and easing off, the group stretches the hoop, slips it over the bucket, and lets it close to grab it (3 min to practice).
- Challenge: lift the bucket and carry it to a second circle about 30 feet away without entering any circle or spilling balls (6 min).
- 2-minute huddle: each group figures out what went wrong and assigns roles, such as who calls the moves and who watches the bucket.
- Timed second try: add 5 seconds for each ball that falls out (5 min). Groups that finish then pour the balls into an empty bucket using only the ropes (4 min).
Rules
- No one steps inside the circles or touches the bucket with their body.
- Hold ropes by the end; never wrap them around your wrist.
- If the bucket falls, the group starts again from the first circle.
- Groups race their own time, not each other.
Variations
Easier
Move the circles 15 feet apart and use an empty bucket.
Standard
Carry the full bucket 30 feet without spilling.
Harder
One student wears a blindfold and another is not allowed to talk.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student is mission control, directing from outside the circle and calling out the bucket's height.
- Shyness: give a specific role, like watching the balls, to make joining in easier.
- Skill level: if a group is very fast, add a cone obstacle along the route.
Learning goals
- Plan a group strategy before acting.
- Coordinate rope tension with teammates.
- Take on roles and respect group decisions.
Equipment for a class of 25
- elastic hoop: 5
- ropes: 25
- buckets: 10
- balls: 25
- cones: 40
Teacher tip
Tie the ropes to the hoops before class to save time. If a group starts arguing, remind them the bucket only moves when everyone pulls evenly.
